The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to lay new water pipelines and replace the existing ones in Mumbai. Of the combined length of around 250 kilometres (km), BMC is likely to replace approximately 130 km of water pipelines and lay around 120 km of new water pipelines. At present, the water distribution network in Mumbai spans a length of around 3,000 km.
The new pipelines will be laid in eastern and western suburbs including areas such as LBS Marg in Ghatkopar, Mahakali Caves Road in Andheri (east), Kandivali to Sudhir Phadake Flyover in Borivali (east) and various pockets in Bandra (east). Alongside, BMC has decided to build a water tank of 22 million litres per day capacity at Vikhroli Parksite having an estimated cost of Rs 150 million.
