By June 2025, the much-anticipated Lucknow-Kanpur Highway is expected to open, cutting the two-hour travel time between the two cities down to only 45 to 55 minutes. At present the project is about 80 per cent finished, the Rs 47 billion project will include advanced technology and an eight-lane highway with elevated parts.
Even though the highway is supposed to transform intercity travel, traffic experts are especially worried about the gridlock at the Gahru junction, where the highway joins the Outer Ring Road. After the highway opens, it is anticipated that the daily number of vehicles on the Ring Road, which is currently 125,000, will further rise by 20–30 per cent.
