Ministry of Power issues guidelines for installation and operation of battery swapping and charging stations

The Ministry of Power (MoP) has issued new guidelines for the installation and operation of battery swapping and charging stations, offering a significant boost to India’s electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem. These guidelines, titled “Guidelines for Installation and Operation of Battery Swapping and Battery Charging Stations”, emphasise the adoption of battery swapping as an alternative to traditional EV charging. The guidelines apply to all entities involved in providing battery-swapping services, including the owners and operators of battery charging stations (BCSs) and battery-swapping stations (BSSs). The guidelines define key components such as BCS, which are facilities designed for recharging swappable batteries, and BSS, where discharged batteries can be quickly swapped with fully charged ones. It also introduces the concept of “battery-to-grid”, where swappable batteries can store energy and provide it back to the grid to aid in energy management and grid stability.
