Larsen and Toubro launches second multi-purpose vessel for Indian Navy

Larsen and Toubro has recently launched a second multi-purpose vessel (MPV) for the Indian Navy from its Kattupalli Shipyard near Chennai. The first MPV, INS Samarthak, was launched three months prior to the introduction of INS Utkarsh, which follows an expedited production schedule. Before being delivered to the Indian Navy, the first vessel is now being prepared for testing and trials.

With a displacement of 3,750 tonnes, these MPVs are 107 metres long and 18.6 metres wide. These MPVs are highly specialised and perform various functions, including serving as trial platforms for the development of next-generation weapons and sensors. Besides, they will perform maritime surveillance, humanitarian assistance, and combat sea pollution, apart from taking up the launch and recovery of surface and aerial assets, among others.
