Tunnel boring machine (TBM) S-639B has been commissioned for package KNPCC-06 at Transport Nagar station under Kanpur metro project phase I project. TBM S-639B, also known as Vidyarthi is an earth pressure balance machine manufactured by Herrenknecht. It will travel to Kanpur Central station via Jhakarkati.
The package KNPCC-06 involves design and construction of tunnel through TBM, cut and cover tunnel, underground ramp from Kanpur Central end of Nayaganj station to elevated ramp after Transport Nagar and three underground metro stations viz. Kanpur Central, Jhakarkatti and Transport Nagar including architectural finishes, electrical and mechanical, tunnel ventilation system, etc. on Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Naubasta via Jhakarkati bus terminal corridor (corridor 1). The joint venture (JV) of Afcons Infrastructure Limited and Sam India Builtwell Private Limited were awarded the contract for the same.
The Kanpur metro project involves development of a 33 km long metro rail at an investment of Rs 110.76 billion.
