The central government has inaugurated the Z-Morh Tunnel in Sonamarg, Jammu & Kashmir, of Rs 27 billion cost providing an all-weather link between Srinagar and the tourist hub of Sonamarg. Spanning 6.40 km, the two-lane tunnel is strategically located at 8,500 feet in Ganderbal district and is part of the larger Zojila Tunnel project, aimed at ensuring year-round connectivity between Srinagar and Ladakh.
The tunnel, capable of handling 1,000 vehicles per hour at speeds up to 80 kmph, includes a 7.50-meter wide parallel escape tunnel for emergencies and dual railway use. Equipped with advanced features like real-time traffic updates, fire signaling, a public address system, and variable speed limit signage, it enhances safety and efficiency.
