The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is set to implement the automated and intelligent machine-aided construction (AIMC) technology to modernise highway construction in India. Following its successful use on the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway, AIMC will now be deployed on select expressways and access-controlled highways as part of a pilot initiative outlined in a draft circular issued on December 16, 2024.
AIMC utilises advanced machinery, including GPS-aided motor graders, intelligent compactors, and stringless pavers, to enhance construction precision and efficiency. The technology ensures improved compaction, smoother road surfaces, real-time monitoring, and reduced human intervention, leading to safer and error-free construction. Aligned with India’s goal to expand its national highway network to 191,000 km by 2047, AIMC is expected to streamline processes, optimise timelines, and improve road quality.
