In a pioneering step towards sustainable urban development, the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority has decided to construct all roads in Visakhapatnam using plastic waste. This decision aligns with the central government’s directive issued on November 26, promoting the use of plastic waste in road construction.
As per the mandate, non-recyclable plastic waste, comprising up to 8 per cent of the blend, will be integrated with asphalt and gravel for constructing wearing coats on service and slip roads of national highways.
Road construction contracts will only be awarded to contractors adhering to this guideline. This innovative approach is expected to manage plastic waste effectively while reducing construction costs and supporting environmental sustainability.
