The construction of the new 9.90-km by-pass road connecting Virudhunagar to the Madurai-Thoothukudi four-lane highway, bypassing Aruppukottai town, is progressing swiftly. Of the total length, 7.50 km has been completed, and all 22 box culverts are finished. Out of nine minor bridges, only one remains, while the road over bridge (ROB) over the Virudhunagar-Manamadur railway track is also advancing, with piers for the 936 m ROB fully erected.
The Rs 1.19 billion project, managed by the State Highways Department (Projects), includes junction improvements at three locations, with Rs 0.35 billion allocated for land acquisition. Once completed, the by-pass will ease traffic congestion in Virudhunagar and ensure quicker, safer travel towards Thoothukudi, Rameswaram, and Madurai. The project is slated for completion by March 2025.
