The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) has established the first STP in Darjeeling. It has a capacity to treat around 1,000 litres of wastewater everyday which is equivalent to 365 kilolitres per year. The STP aims to encourage sustainable wastewater management within the institute by repurposing treated wastewater for toilet flush systems.
Additionally, the HMI has installed a rainwater storage plant with a capacity of 180,000 litres to decrease its dependence on external water sources.
