The Meghalaya government approved land acquisition for the Umroi (Shillong) airport runway expansion project and Baljek Airport on September 25, 2024. The Umroi (Shillong) Airport runway expansion project involves the extension of the runway by 571 metres to accommodate larger aircraft like Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 in the state, entailing an investment of Rs 6 billion. Of this, Rs 1 billion will be borne by the state government and the remaining by the Airports Authority of India.
