Amlan Talukdar: Vice-President (Projects and Operations), Haryana City Gas

Amlan Talukdar has over three decades of expertise across various verticals in the oil and gas sector. Currently, he is working as the vice-president, managing projects and operations across the Haryana City Gas Group. Prior to this, he was associated with Indraprastha Gas Limited and THINK Gas in India. He has accrued international experience by working with Conoil and Greenville Liquefied Natural Gas in Nigeria, Africa. Across his professional stints, he has been involved in various breakthrough projects including oil terminals, city gas distribution (CGD), liquefied petroleum gas, lube blending plants, logistics, LNG production and regasification projects. He has looked after key business verticals such as projects, planning, engineering, business development, marketing and revenue receivables.

On the state of the sector, Talukdar shares that the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board has authorised 300 geographical areas, covering 88 per cent of India’s geographical area. Additionally, LNG terminal capacities are being upgraded to promote the use of compressed natural gas, and liquid-to-compressed natural gas stations are being developed in areas where gas pipeline laying is not possible. The country is now witnessing long-haul trucks switching to green alternateive fuels such as LNG. Global institutions are joining hands and investing in establishing a strategic partnership with CGDs to reduce overall operating costs by switching to digital technologies and internet of things-based devices. Building infrastructure is a significant undertaking for any CGD entity, requiring meticulous planning from the beginning, solid financial backing, and a dedicated team to execute and maintain the project in the long run.

Over the years, Talukdar has had the opportunity to work with some brilliant individuals in shaping the future of the CGD industry. He believes that people are the biggest asset in an organisation. He prefers to be adaptable, communicative, supportive and transparent. In crisis scenarios, he assesses the situation quickly and communicates transparently with the team. He believes that building a healthy team environment within the group and delegating responsibilities empowers every individual to take informed decisions. He believes that there is a solution to every problem, and sometimes a change of perspective is required to find it.

He is an alumnus of the Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur. Talukdar is supported by his mother, his spouse and two daughters in all the crucial decisions of his life.
