To alleviate congestion caused by ongoing metro rail and civic infrastructure projects, state agencies in Chennai are planning new link roads across the city. A key proposal is a 900 m link between Pillayar Koil Street and Padikuppam Main Road, allowing vehicles heading towards Poonamallee and Maduravoyal to bypass the crowded Jawaharlal Nehru Road. Additionally, a 630 m link road will connect DGS Dhinakaran Salai with Durgabai Deshmukh Road, providing an alternative route for vehicles from Mylapore to Adyar and Guindy. The state highways department has issued a tender for Rs 378 million, expected to be completed in 12 months.
A third link road, currently in partial use, is easing traffic along St. Thomas Mount-Mount Poonamallee Road and will remain operational for two years. Temporary diversions are also planned near Madras War Cemetery, with vehicles rerouted through Defence Ministry land to reach Kathipara flyover. Road widening along Jawaharlal Nehru and Greenways Roads is also under consideration.
