India’s container handling capacity to reach 40 million TEUs in next five years

The union minister of ports, shipping and waterways has announced that container handling capacity at India’s central government-controlled ports will nearly double within the next five years, reaching 40 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). This capacity expansion is expected to generate 2 million employment opportunities across the country.

India also plans to set up shipbuilding and repair hubs in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. Additionally, the ministry is allocating more than 3,900 acres in Kandla and V. O. Chidambaranar Port for the development of hydrogen manufacturing hubs.
