The Noida Development Authority has begun laying pipelines to utilise treated wastewater for irrigating the green zones in the city like parks, roadside green belts and other open spaces. Two major projects have been planned for this purpose. Reportedly, the first project comprises of laying pipelines from the sewage treatment plant (STP) in sector 123 to sectors 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 78 and 79 and other neighbouring sectors. The cost of the project is around Rs 700 million. The second project involves connecting the STP in sector 168 to green zones in sectors 150, 151, 152 and 153 with an estimated cost of about Rs 800 million.
At present, work on laying pipelines from sector 123 STP has commenced and is expected to be completed by 2025. The second project, is in the planning stage currently and its estimates are being finalised before beginning the work. Upon completion of these work, Noida is expected to eliminate the use of groundwater to water the green areas. Currently, eight STPs with 411 million litres per day (mld) treatment capacity and spanning six locations are being operated by the authority. However, of this capacity, only 210 mld is being treated.
