The Air India Group has reportedly commenced the construction of a new maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility at Bengaluru, Karnataka on September 4, 2024.
The facility is being constructed on a plot located at the Bengaluru International Airport spanning an area of 35 acres. It would cater to the needs of both base maintenance and line maintenance. It would also feature a mega hangar that can service wide-body and narrow-body aircraft. The latest aircraft maintenance technology like overhead tele platforms and the largest vertical lift hangar doors in the county would be available too.
With this, the airline aims to form a robust and self-reliant aviation ecosystem in the country. Further, with the airline modernising its fleet and expanding global operations, the facility is targeted to emerge as a hub for its aircraft maintenance.
The airline signed a memorandum of understanding with the Government of Karnataka earlier this year for the setting up of the MRO facilities. Additionally, the airline is planning for the construction of a new hangar in Delhi and has invested to refurbish a wide-body aircraft hangar in Mumbai.
