The Indian Highways Management Company Limited, a subsidiary of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), has developed a GIS-based software to monitor waiting times at toll plazas in real-time, aiming to ensure seamless traffic movement. Initially, 100 toll plazas have been selected for live monitoring based on congestion feedback received through the 1,033 National Highway helpline, with plans to expand this service to more toll plazas in phases.
The software provides detailed information, including the name and location of each toll plaza, live queue length in meters, total waiting time, and vehicle speed. It also issues congestion alerts and lane distribution recommendations when vehicle queues exceed prescribed limits. Additionally, the software offers comparative traffic condition analysis on an hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly basis, as well as updates on current weather conditions and local festivals.
