WABAG secures repeat order of Rs 4.15 billion towards seven years O&M contract of 110 mld SWRO Nemmeli desalination plant in Chennai

VA TECH WABAG a leading pure play water technology Indian multinational group, has secured a repeat order worth about Rs 4.15 billion from the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewage Board (CMWSSB) towards operation and maintenance (O&M) of 110 million litres per day (mld) sea water reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant at Nemmeli in Chennai for a period of seven years.

Wabag’s initial O&M contract was completed in 2021, after which the contract was extended by the customer and Wabag continued to operate and maintain the plant. CMWSSB floated a public tender for the O&M of the plant, and Wabag secured this repeat order for operating and maintaining the plant for another seven years.

The Nemmeli desalination plant was inaugurated by the chief minister of Tamil Nadu in 2013. This plant is the first municipal desalination plant built in India on a design, build, operate (DBO) basis for drinking water purposes.

The Nemmeli desalination plant is equipped with the most advanced SWRO technology, ensuring the production of high-quality desalinated water for domestic consumption, coupled with a process that optimises power consumption. The water produced from this plant is being supplied to South Chennai, benefitting millions of residents.

Mr. Shailesh Kumar, chief executive officer of India Cluster, commented on this order, “We are extremely proud to secure this repeat order for the O&M of the 110 mld Nemmeli desalination plant. In line with our growth strategy, this new order further strengthens our O&M order book, providing annuity income, improving cash flows, and revenue predictability. This award underscores the continued trust and confidence our client CMWSSB has in our expertise and consistent performance, for which we are extremely thankful. We look forward to continuing our partnership and ensuring the plant operates at peak efficiency, serving the community by providing safe and reliable water supply.”
