The Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) recommended grant of environment clearance (EC) and coastal regulation zone (CRZ) clearance for development of multipurpose cargo berth (berth no. 17) at New Mangalore Port and development/improvement of infrastructure facilities at Chennai Port in its meeting held on July 4, 2024.
Development of multipurpose cargo berth (berth no. 17) at New Mangalore Port: The project involves the construction of 348 metres long and 26 metres wide berth for handling a cargo capacity of 9 million metric tonnes per annum (mmtpa) in Karnataka. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 2.14 billion.
Development/improvement of infrastructure facilities at Chennai Port: The project involves the development/improvement of six infrastructure facilities at Chennai Port in Tamil Nadu. These are; improvements to the existing Jawahar Dock (east) berths for handling bulk cargoes (no capacity addition), improvement to the existing Bharthi Dock II berth for handling bulk cargoes (no capacity addition), relocation of existing sand trap and capital dredging (no capacity addition), development of multi-level car parking facility (no capacity addition), development of coastal terminal at northern sheltering arm at east of Bharathi Dock turning circle (1 mtpa) and development of storage sheds and tank forms as per the land use plan of the Chennai Port (no capacity addition). The estimated cost of the project is Rs 5.91 billion.
