The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) launched the tunnel boring machine (TBM) Azad from the ramp area near Swadeshi cotton mill on July 15, 2024. This launch marks the beginning of tunnel construction on the final 2.4 km stretch of corridor 1, moving towards Kanpur Central.
Also, trial runs have commenced on the MacRobertganj-Nayaganj stretch under the Kanpur metro rail project phase I.
The Kanpur metro project involves the development of a 33 km long metro rail system in Uttar Pradesh at an investment of Rs 110.76 billion.
