Thiruvananthapuram International Airport has achieved zero waste-to-landfill recognition from the Confederation of Indian Industry Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development, being the first airport in the country to do so. The airport has achieved 99.5 per cent diversion of waste from landfills. All plastic and municipal solid waste, encompassing wet and dry waste, has been diverted from landfills. The airport has integrated a robust value chain system and adopted the reduce, reuse, reprocess, recycle and recover (5R) principles of sustainable waste management to minimise water generation and maximise waste diversion. The airport also has ISO 14001:2015 certification.
