IR awards contract to Sensonic for deployment of advanced elephant detection system on ECoR’s route

IR has awarded a contract to Sensonic IN India Private Limited for the deployment of a more advanced elephant detection system, known as the Gajraj system, on East Coast Railway’s routes. It will help in preventing collisions between trains and elephants by covering over 30 elephant corridors. This system will use the fibre optic sensing technology on 1,200 km of fibres, which will be spread across 400 km of the tracks, covering Odisha and Jharkhand. The vibrations from nearby elephants will be sent through fibre optic cables, which will be then monitored through the distributed acoustic sensing technology. Further, 20 strategically aligned sensing units will also be deployed with supporting equipment that can analyse and monitor the data and send important signals or alerts to loco pilots and other railway staff.
