Gaurav Agarwal: Vice-President, Field Operations, Reliance Jio

Gaurav Agarwal, currently serving as vice-president – Field Operations at Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, is a seasoned telecom professional with over three decades of experience. In this role, Agarwal oversees the operations and maintenance of Jio’s network in the Delhi NCR region, playing a pivotal role in ensuring quality standards during network handover from the construction/deployment team. He  manages 4G/5G nodes, FTTx, enterprise  services, in-building solutions, Wi-Fi, etc. He also manages three huge data centres.

Prior to this, Agarwal worked in various capacities with companies such as Modi Xerox, Ushafone, Bharti Airtel, BPL Mobile, GTL Infrastructure, TVS, Alcatel Lucent and Ericsson India. In terms of industry trends, he feels that the roll-out of 5G networks is revolutionising connectivity. He notes, “Telcos are undergoing digital transformation to streamline operations, enhance customer experience, and offer innovative services like digital payments, content streaming and personalised offerings. Artificial intelligence and machine learning are also being leveraged to optimise network performance and automate processes. Telcos are also prioritising cybersecurity measures to protect networks, data and customers from evolving threats.”

“As technology continues to advance, there are increasing opportunities to innovate and optimise field operation processes, leading to improved service quality and greater efficiency,” he adds. However, Agarwal notes that with an emphasis on outsourcing the field force, the key challenges ahead include retaining quality manpower, imparting timely training and ensuring compliance with the company’s health, safety, environment and fire guidelines.

Reflecting on his most memorable assignment, Agarwal recalls, “My tenure as project head with Airtel in 2004 in Bihar/Jharkhand was memorable as I was responsible for the greenfield launch of GSM services in a record time of 10 months. I played a significant role in building the complete MW backbone, base transceiver station sites across Bihar/Jharkhand and POI connectivity.” Agarwal’s leadership is characterised by clear direction, empowerment and adaptability to fast paced changes.

He holds an engineering degree in electronics and communications from the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, and an M.Tech in telecom from the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok. In his spare time, he cherishes spending time with his family, which comprises his wife and their two daughters.
