Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has decided to continue the installation of water meters, especially in the added areas of the city. It plans to identify the water usage pattern and formulate a wastage model based on which it would be able to supply more water to the dry pockets. The Water Supply Department of KMC would need to identify areas where water misuse is high and counsel the residents to reduce wastage. It also needs to replace broken taps on the roadside that waste huge amounts of filtered water.
KMC produces 450 million gallons per day of treated water from its three major water treatment plants. However, 30 per cent daily loss of treated water is accounted for which can serve 2 million people while addressing the water crisis in large parts of south and east Kolkata.
