The Tiruchi City Corporation has started the preparation of a detailed project report (DPR) to rejuvenate seven major water bodies in the city and its peripheral areas. This initiative is for augmenting the drinking water supply and meeting the water requirement in the future. These waterbodies include Panjapur lake, Kothamangalam big and small tank, and Pirattiyur tank. Additionally, Punganur, Malaipatti, and Kallikudi tanks are also to be added to the city. These waterbodies are maintained by the Water Resources Department.
The restoration work would involve clearing of inlet and outlet channels of the water bodies (to ensure a seamless water flow into the tanks), their desilting to restore original capacity, strengthening bunds on all sides, and removing encroachments and water hyacinths.
