Around 75 per cent SWD construction work completed at Kavalam Basin in Chennai, Tamil Nadu

About 75 per cent of construction work on stormwater drainage (SWD) in the Kovalam basin under the Integrated Storm Water Drainage project for the expanded areas of Chennai Corporation has been completed.

Currently, 553 km out of the 760 km long SWD network has been laid. The work is likely to be completed by 2025. The scope of work involves the construction of integrated stormwater drains in M1 and M2 components in the Kovalam basin in expanded areas of the Greater Chennai Corporation under the KfW fund.

The project involves planning and designing of SWD networks in four drainage basins viz. Kosasthalaiyar, Cooum, Adyar and Kovalam in Tamil Nadu at an investment of Rs 42.25 billion. Besides, almost 99 per cent of SWD network construction work has been completed in core city areas under phase one and the construction work in phase two is expected to be done by July 2024.
