Trichy City Municipal Corporation has identified seven major tanks in peripheral areas to rehabilitate and augment the groundwater table. There has been a huge water shortage with the onset of the summer season. The corporation is also preparing a detailed project report to include recreational amenities in the tanks to benefit the locals.
The tanks identified for the project include Punganur, Kallikudi Panjapur, Pirattiyur, Malaipatti, and Kothamangalam (small and big). These are managed by the Public Works Department. The project would allow the corporation to store water in around 336.7 hectares. Additionally, the corporation has planned to renovate the inlet and outlet mechanisms of the tanks through which river water and rainwater recharge the water bodies.
