As per the Indian Ports Association, the major ports handled a cargo volume of 72.04 million tonnes (mt) in May 2024, an increase of 3.75 per cent year-on-year (YoY), as compared to May 2023 (69.43 mt). Port-wise, Visakhapatnam Port registered the maximum cargo growth in cargo handling at 22.05 per cent, followed by Chennai Port with 9.10 per cent, Cochin Port with 7.78 per cent and Mumbai Port with 5.89 per cent, during the month under consideration.
Meanwhile, Syama Prasad Mookerjee (SMP), Kolkata Port witnessed a 15.70 per cent decline. IPA attributed the decline in cargo handling traffic at the Kolkata Dock System to the reduction in coking and other coal by 71.75 per cent and finished fertilisers by 43.53 per cent, among others.
