Following the Supreme Court’s order setting aside the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) clearance, the proposed plan for the construction of a greenfield airport at Doloo in Silchar, Assam has been halted.
During the hearing of a civil appeal on May 6, 2024, it was noted that the environmental clearance for the project was not obtained. Issues were also pointed out with the uprooting of tea bushes. The state and union government were ordered to maintain the status quo as per the order on April 8, 2024. As per sources, the Supreme Court has asked for the environmental clearance, and has not permanently prevented the establishment of the greenfield airport.
