The ports and shipping sector plays a crucial role in the growth of the economy, acting as the backbone of economic vitality by facilitating the movement of goods, enhancing connectivity and driving overall development. In recent years, India’s maritime landscape has undergone a major transformation, propelled by a series of ambitious reforms and a commitment to achieving excellence. The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) has played a pivotal role in this journey and has helped shape the narrative of India’s maritime resurgence. Situated strategically along the west coast, JNPA is the primary gateway facilitating the country’s burgeoning maritime trade activities. Today, it handles a substantial portion of India’s container cargo, and stands as an example of efficiency and innovation. Unmesh Sharad Wagh, IRS, Chairman, JNPA, shares his views on the organisation’s journey…
Current cargo handling
At the heart of JNPA’s operations lies a commitment to efficiency, innovation and sustainability. Our port serves as a vital artery for international trade, facilitating the seamless movement of goods and fostering economic activity. The port’s deep water draft of 15.5 metres accommodates vessels of up to 17,000 TEUs. The port achieved a significant milestone by recording its highest ever throughput of 6.43 million TEUs in fiscal year 2023-24 and the total traffic handled stands at 85.82 metric tonnes (mt).
JNPA is India’s first 100 per cent landlord major port. The port has been undertaking several initiatives such as the implementation of state-of-the-art technologies, expansion of infrastructure and strategic collaborations that have bolstered JNPA’s position as a leader in the maritime domain.
Journey towards a smart port
In our quest for excellence, technology has emerged as a formidable ally. Leveraging advanced systems such as artificial intelligence and internet of things, we have revolutionised port operations, optimising processes and enhancing productivity. From automated container handling to real-time tracking systems, these innovations have propelled JNPA into the realm of smart port management, setting new benchmarks for efficiency and reliability.
One of the primary challenges we faced as a port was the integration of disparate systems and processes into a cohesive digital ecosystem. Overcoming this hurdle required meticulous planning, robust infrastructure and a collaborative approach involving stakeholders from across the spectrum. Through strategic partnerships with leading technology providers and continuous investment in research and development, we have successfully navigated the complexities of implementation, paving the way for a seamless transition towards smart port excellence.
The voyage towards achieving smart port excellence has been an intricate and multifaceted expedition marked by a plethora of trials and tribulations. The journey has been characterised by a continuous quest for excellence, fuelled by the collaborative efforts of dedicated individuals committed to propelling JNPA towards the forefront of port innovation. Through the synergy of perseverance, cooperation and a steadfast commitment to our goals, we have not only surmounted various challenges, but have emerged from them revitalised and emboldened, poised to embrace the future with renewed vigour and resilience.
The plans to develop JNPA into a fully smart port will enable fully electronically connected systems for better services. This will help the port compete with the best ports globally. The JNPA SEZ, meticulously designed with smart infrastructure and technologies, stands as a testament to JNPA’s journey towards becoming a smart port. Another key project is the centralised parking plaza (CPP), an initiative that streamlines traffic movement and improves port efficiencies using state-of-the-art technologies. The CPP is the first of its kind in India to have an OCR-enabled gate automation system, a smart parking management system and RFID readers installed at gates for real-time updates.
Green port initiatives
As stewards of the environment, JNPA is deeply committed to sustainable practices that minimise ecological footprint and foster responsible growth. Our green initiatives encompass a wide spectrum of activities, including the adoption of eco-friendly fuels, implementation of energy-efficient technologies and promotion of renewable energy sources. By embracing sustainability as a guiding principle, we strive to create a greener, cleaner future for generations to come. To address the global climate change problem at the port level, JNPA has taken up the initiative to acquire green port status.
Solar power
JNPA’s current installed solar capacity is 4.10 MWp. With our public-private partnership (PPP) operators, we are securing green power purchase agreements (PPAs) for solar plants under open access regulations. Along with other initiatives, by the third quarter of 2026, we aim to surpass the Maritime India Vision (MIV) 2030 target of more than 60 per cent renewable energy usage.
Electric/Clean fuel vehicles
JNPA has inducted electric/clean fuel vehicles for internal movement. Further, roadmap preparation is in progress, in consultation with our terminal operators, to stop all the diesel vehicles in the port within five years.
Environmental monitoring
Environmental monitoring is being carried out through IIT Madras at JNPA at all stations in the port area. These include 10 ambient air stations, 11 stations for marine water and ecology, 20 drinking water stations and a sewage treatment plant for sewage effluent quality. JNPA is also committed to sustainable development, and adequate measures are being taken to maintain ecological balance. The port’s ecosystem consists of rich and diverse flora and fauna.
With these and many other initiatives, JNPA has achieved carbon footprint savings of about 10,000 tonnes per year. It is expected that, with the ongoing green initiatives, the port will achieve savings of about 10,600 tonnes per year.
Upcoming Vadhavan Port
JNPA has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Maharashtra Maritime Board for the development of Vadhavan Port (at an estimated cost of Rs 762.2 billion). The port will be located about 150 km from Mumbai. It is being built with the idea of reducing logistics costs and providing hinterland connectivity through the Mumbai-Delhi western railway line, which is at a distance of 12 km from the port, and National Highway-8, which is about 33.4 km from it. It has the potential to be among the top 10 container ports in the world. The Vadhavan Port will add a container capacity of 15 million TEUs in the first phase, which will increase to about 23.2 million TEUs in the second phase. The major components of the port will include a breakwater of 10.14 km, reclamation in the intertidal/offshore area including shore protection amounting to 1,448 hectares, and 571 hectares of land for rail and road connectivity. Vadhavan Port will be a smart green port and will use green energy. Moreover, it will provide shore (green) power to the ships and only electric or green fuel trucks will be allowed at the port.
These initiatives, alongside the visionary Vadhavan Mega Port, stand as testaments to JNPA’s dedication to setting new benchmarks in global practices and using smart technologies to drive rapid economic growth.
Navigating towards new horizons
As we set sail towards the future, the horizon brims with promise and possibility. JNPA is poised to chart new territories, embrace emerging technologies and lead the maritime renaissance in India. Our vision for the future is anchored in innovation, sustainability and inclusive growth, as we continue to redefine the contours of excellence in the ports and shipping sector.
Innovation lies at the heart of our future endeavours, driving transformative change and unlocking new avenues of growth. From digitalisation and automation to predictive analytics and beyond, we are committed to harnessing the full potential of technology to revolutionise port operations and enhance efficiency. By fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship, we aim to propel JNPA to greater heights of success in the years to come. Further, sustainability will remain a cornerstone of our future roadmap, guiding our actions and decisions towards a greener, more sustainable future. Through the adoption of eco-friendly practices, promotion of renewable energy sources and conservation of natural resources, we will continue to tread lightly on the planet while driving economic growth and prosperity.
The journey of transforming JNPA into a smart port stands as a testament to the power of vision, perseverance and collaboration. As we navigate the seas of change, guided by the beacon of progress, let us chart a course towards a future defined by innovation, sustainability and inclusive growth. Together, we will continue to steer India’s maritime destiny towards new horizons of prosperity and prominence on the global stage.
