The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPIA) Airport at Ahmedabad has plans for the expansion of the parallel taxiway to match the runway length of 3.5 km over the next 12 months.
With this, a larger number of aircraft can be accommodated along the taxiway at the airport, and also ensure more effective utilisation of the runway. Works for a 395 m parallel taxiway extension was recently completed at the airport. The airport currently handles around 24 ATMs per hour. The landings and take offs are likely to witness a 50 per cent increase once the taxiway is fully operational. The taxiway is also likely to be connected to the runway from three points after completion of the work. Land acquisition for the expansion is currently underway and is a part of the airport’s second phase of runway expansion. The airport currently operates around 250 flights and handles around 37,000 passengers a day.
