Construction of Shinku La Tunnel to begin in June 2024

The construction of the Shinku La Tunnel, set to commence in June 2024, is poised to significantly improve all-weather connectivity in Ladakh. The 4.1km tunnel, located on the Nimu-Padam-Darcha road link, is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. This strategic infrastructure project aims to bolster security measures by providing the Indian Army with unimpeded access to border areas with China and Pakistan.

Upon completion, the Shinku La Tunnel, situated at an elevation of 16,580 feet, will become the world’s highest motorable tunnel. The project, with a budget of Rs. 17 billion, has been awarded to the Border Roads Organisation. It is expected to streamline transportation of heavy machinery to strategic locations such as Kargil, Siachen, and the Line of Control (LOC), reducing travel distances by approximately 100 km.
