Metrowater has completed around 28 per cent of work for the piped water supply project in Semmanchery, Chennai. As a part of the project, around 51,100 residents may receive piped water supply by March 2025. At present, Metrowater is laying 3.6 km of conveying main to carry water from distribution stations or main pipelines to overhead tanks and 25.2 km of the distribution main pipeline that will distribute water from overhead tanks to households. Semmanchery’s residents will be receiving 7.93 mld of desalinated water from the 150 mld Nemmeli desalination plant via two overhead tanks of 1.5 million litres and 2.1 million litres capacities. The project being carried out with an outlay of Rs 501.9 million began in June 2023 and will provide water supply connections to 1,100 households. Currently, the independent households draw water from borewell and open well water while apartments order water from private and Metrowater tankers.
