Centre has introduced a new satellite-based toll collection system that will deduct money directly from bank accounts based on the distance traveled, marking the end of toll collection on highways. This system aims to save time and money for commuters.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) plans to implement this system by March 2024. The Centre has also released a tender seeking a technical consultant to prepare a plan for the project. Efforts to streamline toll plaza processes and reduce waiting times have been shared with the World Bank.
The introduction of FASTag has already reduced average waiting times at toll plazas from 714 seconds to just 47 seconds, demonstrating a substantial improvement.
