Centre lays foundation stone for development of outer harbor container terminal project at VOC Port

The central government has laid the foundation stone for the development of the outer harbour container terminal project, including dredging and construction of a breakwater at V.O. Chidambaranar (VOC) Port. The project involves the development of two container terminals, each with a quay length of 1,000 metres, in the outer harbour. The capacity of the two container terminals is assessed to be 80 (mtpa) (4 million TEUs each). It also involves breakwater construction, capital dredging in the outer harbour basin and approach channel, construction of a rubble bund for the reclamation of dredged materials to create a backup yard, berth/jetty construction, mechanisation in the berth and stack yard, railway line laying and installation of navigational aids. This will be developed in two stages.
