Cargo handling falls by 2.6 per cent at Chennai Airport

The Chennai airport has witnessed a 2.6 per cent decline in the cargo handled, to around 0.277 million tonnes from April 2023 to January 2024, in comparison to 0.284 million tonnes during the same period last year. The airport also witnessed a 1.5 per cent decline in the volume of cargo handled in 2022-23 in comparison to the previous year. The airport also handled a larger volume of international cargo in comparison to the domestic cargo, with the international cargo handled standing at around 0.21 million tonnes during April 2023 to January 2024 in comparison to around 0.067 million tonnes of domestic cargo during the same period. Besides, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is currently working on expanding the freight and passenger handling capacity of the airport.
