The Railway Board (RB) has initiated trial run for hydrogen-powered train between Kalka and Shimla. It will help in lowering of carbon footprints along with upgradation of the railways. The Kalka-Shimla route will be the first narrow gauge network to facilitate hydrogen trains. Also, three hydrogen gas stations will be built on Kalka, Shimla and Barog for the purpose of extraction of the hydrogen from water for supplying fuels to these trains.
