Projects worth Rs 3.08 billion launched for North East region

On February 20, 2022, the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways launched projects worth Rs 3.08 billion for the North East region. The projects include passenger-cum-cargo terminal at Bogibeel near Dibrugarh, inland water transport terminal (IWT) at Sonamura in Tripura and upgraded terminals at Karimganj and Badarpur in Assam. These projects will provide a major push for the development of waterways in the region. Besides, foundation stone was laid for construction of custom immigration office in Dhubri and construction of a compound wall for Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) Jogighopa terminal.
The Bogibeel terminal is being built with an investment of Rs 500 million. It includes cargo and passenger berths, approach and other internal roads, a transit shed, open storage area, truck parking area, passenger waiting area.
The IWT terminal at Sonamura is developed with an investment of Rs 69.1 million. The upgraded terminals at Karimganj and Badarpur were completed with an investment of Rs 64 million.
Moreover, two electric catamarans will be deployed in Guwahati by August 2024. At a cost of Rs 360 million, developed by Cochin Shipyard Limited, will enhance communication facilities for the people of Guwahati. Also, 19 passenger vessels for National Waterway (NW)-2 and NW-16 would be provided and two pontoon terminals on NW-2 will be constructed at a cost of Rs 250 million.
