IR commissioned a total of 10,867 road overbridges (ROBs)/road underbridges (RUBs) during 2014-23. In 2023-24 (as of December 2023), construction had been completed for a total of 612 ROBs/RUBs at an investment of Rs 39.7 billion. These works have been taken up to eliminate manned level crossings (LCs), which impact the safety of train operations, the mobility of trains, etc. Other measures taken by IR for railway safety include provision of electrical/electronic interlocking systems with centralised operation at 6,521 stations; complete track circuiting of stations at 6,558 stations; and interlocking of 11,143 LC gates, till December 31, 2023.
