The foundation stone for the new terminal building at Rajahmundry airport was laid on December 10, 2023. The building will be built on 17,029 square metres of land, which is 400 times the existing one, taking the total area after expansion to 21,094 square metres. The project will entail a cost of Rs 3.5 billion. The building will cater to 2,100 passengers during peak hours and 3 million passengers annually. The airport will have 28 check-in counters, three aerobridges, a parking area for approximately 600 cars, etc. Further, the new terminal targets a 5-star GRIHA rating, with salient features including thermal insulation and ensuring energy efficiency, LED lighting, rainwater harvesting systems and sewage treatment plants. The Rajahmundry airport currently handles 126 weekly flight movements and is connected to Hyderabad, Chennai and Bengaluru.
