Hardip Singh Rai is the chief executive officer of THINK Gas. He transitioned from a 25-year career in investment banking to establish a presence in the city gas distribution (CGD) sector in India. After graduating from Cambridge University with a degree in aeronautical engineering, Rai began his journey in finance by joining an accountancy firm, where he eventually became a chartered accountant. In subsequent years, Rai transitioned to investment banking, where he worked on notable merger and acquisition transactions, including large global mergers that reshaped entire industries.
Becoming managing director at Morgan Stanley was a pivotal moment for him. He subsequently made contributions to Barclays Capital and UBS, and decided to retire at the age of around 50. Thereafter, he returned to India to reconnect with his heritage, and embarked on a mission to contribute positively to the nation. He founded a business with a focus on creating employment opportunities, improving the environment and making a positive impact on the population. These milestones have been integral to his professional journey, which continues to evolve in the CGD sector.
At THINK Gas, he is responsible for setting its strategic direction, which involves making decisions crucial to its long-term goals and vision. He also handles day-to-day challenges, often collaborating closely with the team to address and resolve issues.
Rai attributes a portion of his problem-solving abilities to his technical and engineering background. He also places great emphasis on integrity, honesty and transparency in his interactions. This approach is integral to both his personal values and the core values of the organisation. According to him, innate curiosity fuels his constant quest for innovative solutions and improvements. He is unwavering in his commitment to overcoming challenges and enhancing processes. He professes deep concern for the individuals in the organisation and their career growth. As a leader, one of his primary responsibilities is to support the development of individuals within the company. Witnessing the personal and professional growth of team members as they achieve their ambitions is profoundly rewarding to him.
Family holds a special place in Rai’s heart. He also has a strong passion for rugby, a sport that has been a significant part of his life, both as a player and a fan.
