Reverse vending machines at CSMIA

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), Mumbai, has reportedly recycled 8,890 used bottles via reverse vending machines (RVMs) in the airport in ten months, up to October 2023. The two RVMs were installed at P4 and P6 in Terminal 2, in January 2023. Three additional RVM units are to be installed at the airport in November 2023. Each RVM can reportedly process up to 450 bottles an hour, and 70 per cent of the waste can be compressed, enabling easier transportation to the recycling centres. It thus helps save resources, and reduce transportation and logistics costs as well as emissions. The airport has adopted various other green initiatives such as solar energy and waste recycling. The RVMs are user friendly, with 16-inch touch screens for user guidance. They are also patented and spill-proof.
