The NHAI has received government approval to utilise funds raised through NHAI InvIT solely for the purpose of servicing its escalating debt, which has exceeded Rs 3.4 trillion. NHAI has been allocated Rs 1,622.07 billion in the 2023-24, a 15 per cent increase from the 2022-23 revised estimates.
This move enables NHAI to monetise fully constructed national highways with a minimum one-year toll collection history, while retaining the right to levy tolls on these identified highways. As of end-September, 2023, NHAI’s total outstanding debt remains more than Rs 3.4 trillion.
