IR is working towards modernisation of signalling system. As of June 30, 2023, some of the important works done are:
• Provision of electrical/electronic interlocking system with centralised operation of points and signals in place of old mechanical signaling. These systems have been provided at 6,443 stations.
• Complete track circuiting of stations to enhance safety for verification of track occupancy by electrical means has been provided at 6,381 stations
• 11,102 level crossing gates installed for enhancing safety
• Axle counters for automatic clearance of block section, block proving axle counter are provided to ensure complete arrival of train without manual intervention before granting line clear to receive next train and to reduce human element. These systems have been provided on 6,412 block sections
• Automatic block signaling (ABS) has been provided at 3,946 rkm
• Wi-Fi facility has been provided at 6,108 stations
