Changing market shares of airlines
- The airline industry has undergone major changes in the past few years. The takeover of Air India, the launch of Akasa Air, the insolvency of Go First and the suspension of Jet Airways’ operations are notable developments.
- This is also reflected in the market shares of airlines. IndiGo continues to be the market leader, followed by Vistara. Meanwhile, the shares of SpiceJet and Air India have declined.
Airport capacity expansion
- With rising demand and saturation at major airports, capacity augmentation has become a necessity.
- New capacities are being added through the setting up of 21 greenfield airports, of which 11 have been operationalised, and infrastructure expansions are being undertaken at existing airports.
