In a notable development, as on August 1, 2023, Indian Railways (IR) has electrified 59,524 km length of the broad-gauge network. Apart from this, as on August 3, 2023, 50 Vande Bharat services are operational on the network. IR is also working towards increasing speed of trains. To that end, works for raising of sectional speed to 160 km per hour on existing New Delhi-Mumbai (including Vadodara-Ahmedabad) and New Delhi-Howrah (including Kanpur-Lucknow) routes have been sanctioned costing Rs 68.06 billion and Rs 66.85 billion, respectively.
