In order to increase safety in rail operations, IR has undertaken various measures. Electronic interlocking systems with centralised operation of points and signals have been provided at 6,427 stations upto May 31, 2023 to eliminate accident due to human failure. Meanwhile, interlocking of level crossing (LC) gates has been provided at 11,093 level crossing gates up to May 31, 2023 for enhancing safety at LC gates. The complete track circuiting of stations to enhance safety for verification of track occupancy by electrical means has been provided at 6,377 stations upto May 31, and automatic block signalling (ABS) has been provided at 3,940 route km upto May 31, 2023, including 1,006 nos. in last five years.
