The fourth runway and a new dual elevated eastern cross taxiway (ECT) of the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Delhi were inaugurated on July 14, 2023. IGIA becomes the only airport to have four operational runways along with a dual elevated ECT after this development. The length of the runway is 4.4 kilometres (km) and can handle around 1,500 to 2,000 flights per day. Reportedly, the newly constructed ECT is 2.1 km in length and will connect southern and northern airfields, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 55,000 tonnes annually. The taxi distance will also decrease by 7 km for an aircraft with ECT and simultaneously it can accommodate two aircraft such as A-380 and B-777. Along with this, the time spent on the tarmac comprising both take-offs and after-landing by the flyers will also reduce by 15 to 20 minutes.
