New integrated terminal building of Veer Savarkar International Airport gets inaugurated

The new integrated terminal building of Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Bair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands was inaugurated on July 18, 2023. The new facility will be capable of handling 5 million passengers per annum (mppa) and 1,200 passengers during peak hours. It is built at a cost of Rs 7.1 billion and is spread across an area of 40,837 square metres (sq m) with its design depicting an oyster-shaped structure that resembles sea and islands. It also has various sustainability features like a double insulated roofing system to decrease heat gain, an onsite sewage treatment plant that treats 100 per cent of wastewater which can be reused for landscaping, and a solar power plant of 500 kilowatt capacity, among others. Along with this, an airport tarmac which is suitable for two Boeing-767-400 and two Airbus-321-type aircraft has also been constructed at a total cost of Rs 0.8 billion.
