IR plans to make the signalling system along its network electronic over the next six years in a bid to avoid train accidents. The mission to make the entire signalling network electronic is expected to entail investments to the tune of Rs 1 trillion. It will replace the existing electro-mechanical system with solid state electronic route relay devices and signals. The main aim of this mission is to make the network safer and avoid human errors. Ministry of Railways also plans to prepare a list of vendors for supplying the necessary equipment for the new system. The new system will also reduce the need for frequent maintenance and prevent tempering of system. One of the vendors approved by the railways ministry is Japan’s signal system manufacturer Kyosan. Tenders will be invited for selecting other venders.
